A traditional ruler in Oyo state, the Atapa of Itapa Ijesa, Dr. Olapade Agoro, has threatened to file a lawsuit against Senator Dino Melaye over his verbal attack on Senator Remi Tinubu during the senate plenary early this month. Speaking to the Nation at his palace yesterday, Agoro who is a politician and religious leader said

    “No wonder, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, without mincing words, told the whole world that the National Assembly is full of corrupt legislators. That was a weighty statement. When you say corruption, you are not limiting it to taking bribe.It could be immoral. By what he did on the floor of the Senate, I will say Melaye has committed immorality. For this young man to have lost morality and commonsense on the floor of the hallowed chamber, to have threatened to beat up a woman, that was too much. You don’t say you want to beat up another man’s wife on the hallowed chamber; forget who the husband is. That issue is beyond political scene. It raises the question of morality. When a man says he will beat up another man’s wife and even impregnate her, it means the man has admitted to be a rapist. By now, the police should have stepped in. It’s a reckless and senseless vituperation that should be taken beyond the floor of the Senate. The young man has been so reckless ever since he became a senator. It shows how corrupt he is. I don’t know why that type of character should be allowed to continue staying in the Senate. The APC should have by now sanctioned him to protect the name of the party, not demanding an apology from him. I could have taken him court, if not for anything, because we don’t expect characters like him in the Senate. He should be made to face the music”

Remi Tinubu released 75million to sponsor protest against Senator Dino Melaye

Senator Dino Melaye has alleged that Senator Remi Tinubu has released N75 million to sponsor a protest against him. He made the allegation in a post on his Facebook wall this evening. He wrote;

    A civil rights movement, Committee for the Defence of Women’s Rights, has uncovered a plan by the wife of a former governor of Lagos State and chairman, Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu to sponsor a protest against Senator Dino Melaye this coming Wednesday in Abuja.
The organisation said she has released N75 million to Lagos State APC Woman Leader, Mrs. Kemi Nelson through one of her sisters simply identified as Funlola. The National President of CDWR, Prof. Taibat Majekodunmi, made the revelation in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja. Already, the protesters have stormed Abuja and have booked for 300 rooms in many Hotels in hotels in Abuja. She said,
 “We have it on good authority that N75 million has been released by Senator Okuremi Tinubu to Mrs. Kemi Nelson through Mrs. Tinubu’s sister called Funlola.
The money is to organise a protest in Abuja on Wednesday against the chairman, Denate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dino Melaye, with 1,000 protesters from Lagos. “The protesters have booked for 300 rooms in some hotels in Abuja. Why did she not organise a protest against the hardship of Nigerian women and widows.

Governor Ayodele Fayose threatened former President Goodluck Jonathan before the 2014 governorship election in the state.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) former secretary in Ekiti State, Tope Aluko, has alleged that Governor Ayodele Fayose threatened former President Goodluck Jonathan before the 2014 governorship election in the state.
Aluko, who previously revealed the shocking rigging details of the election on national TV, Fayose demanded the support of Jonathan for his governorship bid if ex-president wanted to win the south-west in the 2015 election. according to The Nation,Aluko  disclosed this in an interview programme on ADABA 88.9 FM, Akure, Ondo State capital.

He said Jonathan released huge funds for the controversial June 21, 2014, governorship election, the money which, according to him, led to a clash between Fayose and Musiliu Obanikoro.
“Fayose was threatening former President Goodluck Jonathan that he (Fayose) must deliver so that Jonathan will win in south-west. All the PDP elders were kept out of picture on the transactions and cash and some of the cash deployed did not get to their destinations,” he said.
“The presidency gave us security and money, the money was sent from a Diamond Bank branch through an account run by Sylvan MacNamara, a company owned by Obanikoro.
“My boss said he wanted to get his own in cash and that was why arrangement was made to get his own in cash and that was why such a huge amount (N2.1 billion) was ferried by plane. Obanikoro cannot claim not to have brought the money.
“He (Fayose) chose his man, Abiodun Agbele, to keep the money in a Zenith Bank account and the money was lodged at Zenith Bank, Alagbaka Branch in Akure. The transaction was not recorded and it got to a stage when it was discovered that the money was short by N80 million.
“This caused a crisis between Fayose and Obanikoro who brought money thrice from Abuja. He (Obanikoro) brought other things apart from money which I won’t disclose now and it was from it that N1 billion was released to INEC officials to manipulate Ekiti and Osun polls,” Aluko revealed.
He further stated that prior to the the governorship election in 2014, Fayose did not have up to N10 million in his personal account, adding that the Governor's primary election was sponsored by Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Aluko alleged that after Fayose had won the primary, his election campaign was funded by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), which was headed by Sambo Dasuki.
According to him, oil contractors also co-funded the election campaign.
He said Zenith Bank and other corporate organizations came with business proposals after Fayose had won the election, insisting that the governor’s claim that his campaign was sponsored by Zenith Bank was a “blatant lie”.
“The cash carried on the plane was not entered into the plane manifest, the N2.1 billion was delivered to a bank at 4:30am in Ekiti. The N2.3 billion remaining from the total cash received for the election was used to buy house in Abuja and the house belongs to Fayose," he alleged.

He said Fayose purchased five houses in choice locations in Abuja, Banana Island and Victoria Island, Lagos, with the N2.3 billion.
Aluko added that the Governor's N3 billion Dubai property was purchased by a man identified as Bisi better known as 'Femi Abroad.'

The Niger Delta Avengers vowed to cripple Nigeria’s economy

The Niger Delta Avengers has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting the removal of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and replace him with Uche Ogah. Vanguard reports that the militants claimed Ogah is loyal to the AP even though he is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The group which has claimed responsibility for series of bombing of oil and gas pipeline in the region vow to continue its havoc until the economy collapses.
The twitter account of the militant group was suspended on Monday, July 4 but a new twitter page was opened on Tuesday, July 5. The group said it was not ready to dialogue with the federal government.

“We don’t need money from anybody for dialouge.” “The only way peace will reign in Nigeria is by referendum to determine the fate of Nigeria,”
they also accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of bribing twitter to shut down its account and vowed to continue its mission. It threatened that the federal government would regret the action and hinted that more destructive actions would be taken.

Court grants Femi Fani Kayode bail

Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos has granted the former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode bail in the sum of N250m
Fani-Kayode is standing trial over allegations of N4.9b fraud levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice Hassan also asked the former minister to keep his passport with the court, and also provide two sureties in like sum who must be owners of landed properties with the jurisdiction of the court.
The court also requested that the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment.The Minister of State for Finance, Nemandi Usman was also granted bail with the same conditions.
The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, revealed that Fani-Kayode committed an offence under Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012, punishable  under Section 15(3)( 4) of the same Act, when he allegedly diverted the sum of N1.5b.Justice Sule Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos, ordered the imprisonment of Femi Fani-Kayode on June 28, 2016.

Federal high court has refused to review the order made against the governor of Abia state

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court has said that the court cannot review, its earlier order made against the governor of Abia state, Okezie Ikpeazu.
Abang made this known in his ruling on monday when Wole Olanipekun counsel to the embattled Abia state, prayed the court to set aside its ruling which sacked the governor last Monday. However, Abang said there would be a ruling on the application for stay of execution and an order asking the electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return to Uche Ogah on Thursday, July 7. The embattled governor of Abia state, Ikpeazu had in an application urged the court for a stay of execution on Abang’s ruling on Monday, June 27, which mandated him to vacate the governorship seat for Ogah. Also, Ogah’s counsel, Alex Iziyon accused Ikpeazu of employing self help tactics by approaching another High in Abia state to get an exparte order restraining the chief justice of the state from swearing in the new governor elect. “The question that arises now bothers on sanctity and sanity of this court order, now asking for a date to respond when they have in their pocket an order which has chained the plaintiff from presenting himself for swearing in, contrary to the order of this court,” Iziyon said.
Iziyon said: “If the court will grant an adjournment on the remedy that has been gotten, our application is that your lordship undue the act because it was made when this particular application was pending.”

, Ikpeazu’s lawyer argued that the application was a harmless one. He said a counter affidavit filed by Ogah has not been served on him. The counsel also said that there is no formal application before to show proof of the order gotten from the Federal High Court in Abia state. Making his submission, counsel to INEC, Alhassan Umar confirmed that the certificate of return issued to Ogah speaks for itself. Umar said the issuance of the certificate of return is in line with order of the court. Meanwhile, the Abia state Internal Revenue Service has revealed that the tax clearance it issued to Okezie Ikpeazu was not a fake one. Ikpeazu was removed by Justice Okon Abang who also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately issue Certificate of Return to Dr Uche Ogah, who came second in the December 8, 2014 primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Vanguard reports that Udochukwu Ogbonna who is the executive chairman of the internal revenue service clarified that it issued an original tax clearance to Ikpeazu and that neither the court nor the plaintiff Dr Ogah invited the revenue board as witness to state the authenticity or otherwise of the tax papers.

Edo state in hot soup with Ali Modu Sheriff see why

The Edo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ignore Ali Modu Sheriff’s candidate for the upcoming governorship elections.
 PDP also added that Osagie Ize-Iyamu remains the only recognised candidate who will stand in the elections.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Ahmed Makarfi faction, Prince Dayo Adeyeye said "In Edo, the Sheriff faction is saying INEC must recognise the candidate submitted by it (Sheriff faction). How would INEC take something from a man that is only a busybody to the party?

“If a court had ruled that Sheriff is not the chairman of the PDP, how then would a court say that INEC should recognise a candidate recognised by Sheriff.”

Adding that “Sheriff is saying that he is the national chairman of the PDP by a court order even when the governors and other members of the party have rejected him. Some people are trying to use the judiciary to destroy Nigeria’s democracy.

“An example is what is playing out in Abia State. But we are not going to allow our nation’s democracy to be destroyed. Nigeria has become a laughing stock and we must sensitise people to this because it (indiscriminate court injunctions) is a new development.

“People are trying to manipulate the judiciary for their own gains and this is dangerous for democracy. The PDP National Convention is supreme and Sheriff has no legal basis to parade himself as the PDP national chairman.”

The PDP berated the president over the arrest of Senator Iyiola Omisore on Sunday, July 3.
Its spokesman, Prince Diran Odeyemi said the development was a “witch-hunt”, wondering why the federal government was “shielding” members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from prosecution. Odeyemi said Buhari was keen on silencing the opposition, adding that his anti-corruption fight “would continue to be a ruse, in-as-much-as many corrupt people within the ruling party, APC are not exposed and prosecuted”.

“The ruling All Progressives Congress, at present, has in its fold, some of the most corrupt individuals that other parties, including PDP found rather too dirty to be accommodated, and yet they are being covered with the party’s duvet. “Today, Buhari is keeping Femi Fani-Kayode, Esther Nenadi Usman in prison, Olisa Metu almost lost his life in detention and now it’s the turn of Omisore while Fayose and Akpabio are being trailed. “We implore Mr President to re-examine his anti-corruption fight and make it total instead of the targeted attacks on PDP members to permanently silence opposing voices in the country,”
Odeyemi said.

The Abia chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it will resist any attempt to inaugurate, Sampson Ogah, as the new governor of the state.

“We are ready for them, we are ready to die,” the party said, adding, “If they do it, then they are inviting anarchy and confusion in the state."
The party made the resolution and declaration at the end of its emergency meeting in Umuahia on Thursday, June 30.
The state Chairman of the party, Johnson Onuigbo, accompanied by members of the executive committee, said the party got wind of a plan to flood the state with military personnel
Mr. Onuigbo said such an invasion would trigger off anarchy, adding that the party was poised for showdown over the planned inauguration.
He described the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which ordered that Mr. Ogah be sworn in as “a rape of democracy.”
The court, presided over by Justice Okon Abang, on Tuesday ordered Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to vacate office as governor over the case of tax evasion.
Justice Abang also ordered that Mr. Ogah, who came second in the PDP primaries, should be sworn in as the governor.
Mr. Ogah was also issued the Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Thursday.
The PDP chairman, however, said the judgment and issuance of Certificate of Return to Mr. Ogah had undermined the peace and tranquillity enjoyed in the state.
“Abia is not safe. I didn’t want to believe the rumour that the state will soon be invaded by the army because this is not a war zone.
“We want to inform the world that there is tension in Abia because democracy is about to be raped.
“As a party, we will resist any move by anybody to undermine the peace in the state,” Mr. Onuigbo said.
He said that as a law-abiding state, the government had obtained an exparte injunction “restraining the state Chief Judge or any other judges from swearing in Mr. Ogah as governor”.

“We are ready for them, we are ready to die,” he said, adding, “If they do it, then they are inviting anarchy and confusion in the state.“
We are in a democracy so we want the world to hear and know that we are being shortchanged in Abia,” he said.
Mr. Onuigbo said the party had sent emissaries to Mr. Ogah to persuade him “to sheath his sword and allow peace to reign in Abia” to no avail.
He said that at the end of the current crisis, the party would met out sanction to Mr. Ogah for disregarding entreaties from the chieftains of the party.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo state holds mass rally against Mr President

The Ondo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it has uncovered plans by the state Governor, Olusegun Mimiko to hold a mass rally against President Buhari.
The party said the Governor’s plan is to project the believe that people are not in support of the President.
Daily Post reports that the Ondo State APC Publicity Secretary, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, issued a statement saying “N3,000 each has been earmarked for the over 5,000 youths and some imported students from the South-South region that are participating in the rally.

“It is unfortunate that while workers are on strike for the unpaid six months salaries, Mimiko is planning to spend another tax payers’ money on illegal rally.

“We are informed that Mimiko was moved to stage the protest because he is scared of the wind of anti-corruption war which is sweeping all corrupt individuals in the country.

“We know that Governor Mimiko is scared. Since his colleague in Ekiti state has been alleged to have link with the Dansukigate.

“Maybe the Governor has some questions to answer in the ongoing investigations into the $2.1bn arms deal (Dasukigate), in the anti corruption war going on in the country

“If Governor Mimiko has nothing to fear, there is no need for the plan rally against the Buhari’s anti corruption campaign.

“The Party is alerting members of the public, especially, security agencies to be alert and battle ready to combat these army of youths that the Governor is bringing to the state.”

The ‎Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators caucus in the upper chamber of the national assembly have withdrawn their support for the President Muhammadu Buhari’s-led government. The lawmakers announced their decision at a press briefing at the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 22. The PDP senators listed the alleged continuous victimization of its members by anti-graft agency, proposed trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu for alleged forgery of senate standing rule as part of the reasons for their grievance against the APC-led government.In a statement read by Emmanuel Bawcha, deputy minority leader said:
 “We condemn the plot to remove the senate president and his deputy through illegal means. We will no longer cooperate with the APC government until they cease their belligerent acts.”

One of the accussed House of Rep member writes to the US Ambassador

One of the House of Representatives members, Samuel Ikon pictured, who alongside two others have been accused of sexual misconduct while in the US for an official assignment in April this year, have written to the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, asking that a thorough investigation be carried out on the matter so that his name will be cleared.
In the letter, Ikon stated that he is a happily married man who does not need to find comfort in the arms of any  prostitute. According to him, he was ill all through out his stay in the US and as a result could not have had sex.Read the full text of his letter after the cut:

It is with a deep sense of sadness and great hurt that I write to respond to a letter dated June 9, 2016 addressed to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, copied to me and signed by you, alleging that I, Hon. Samuel Ikon, with Hon. Mark Gbillah requested hotel parking attendants assist us solicit  prostitutes.
Let me state unequivocally sir that this allegation is not just false, but in bad taste. I Hon. Samuel Ikon never on that trip, nor on any trip to the US or anywhere in this world, ever sought to consort with prostitutes. This act would not only be inimical to my health, but totally unacceptable to my faith.
May I draw your attention Mr. Ambassador to the fact that I almost did not make that trip due to my state of health, a situation that was well known to your mission accompanying staff Mrs. Victoria Ibi. Even at the airport before our departure, I still was not sure but travelled due to the deep respect and appreciation I had at the time for the US government nominating me for the program on one hand, and the fact that I carried necessary medication for the Malaria and Typhoid that I was diagnosed of.
Mr. Ambassador, I was miserable throughout our stay in Washington DC and only got a bit stable in Cleveland when the medication began to kick in. Secondly, I was at the same time on medication to reduce my PSA level which tests in February this year had indicated a disturbing increase thus the issue of sex was totally ruled out for me in view of my health (laboratory results available if needed). I therefore find it funny and unacceptable to be so linked as in your letter.
I have another proof of my innocence which wiII completely tear down this false conclusion but will leave it out for a later time should you fail  to redeem my integrity and I am forced to take legal action.
I wish to categorically state that at no time did I either alone, or in the company of Hon. Mark Gbillah a gentlemen with impeccable moral standing, approach any parking lot staff or any hotel staff for that matter to assist me solicit for prostitutes. It never happened nor was ever intended or thought of.
I have been in the legislature in the past nine (9) years and has attended over 30 conferences, seminars and meetings in about 20 countries globally and has never sought for a prostitute in any of these countries including the USA. I was in New York for a UN hearing on Narcotics in February for 4 days and never sought for a prostitute. My impeccable record of accomplishment is there to be seen. I have done programs in Harvard and Stanford Universities in the US and completed them successful without an incident or request  for  prostitutes.
I am an Elder in my Church since 2006 and clearly knows the tenets and doctrines of my faith one of which abhors such desires for prostitutes as such very offensive to be so linked.
His Excellency sir, let me inform you that I am happily married to a woman who is a mother, friend and confidant to me for twenty (20) years now and I have no reason to seek comfort in the bosom of a prostitute with all the attendant health risks especially the latest known as Zika Virus which has entered the USA.
Mr Ambassador, I therefore find this false allegation condemnable, repugnant and totally unacceptable to me.
Most distressing is the statement in your letter that your mission took pains to confirm this allegation and my identity. How sad. How can you confirm it to be my identity when I never had such an encounter with any hotel staff.
Moreover, how did you come to such conclusion without any fair hearing as you never sought my own view or account. Not driving a car myself, what would I be doing at the parking lot area, to then meet a staff there for such discussions?
May I draw your Excellency’s attention to how he would feel or react if after a meeting, say in the state department in Washington DC, he returns to Abuja only to receive a letter two months later that he sought to consort with prostitutes whilst in DC, an allegation His Excellency knows is false because he never did such . That’s exactly how I feel now.

•  I never sought anyone’s help to get prostitutes .

•  I never had need for prostitutes.

• My health situation especially at the time could not have allowed such desires.

• My faith abhors such desires.

•  I have never desired a prostitute .

I wish to draw your attention to the fact that it was myself and Hon. Mark Gbillah that sought to travel with our wives but your mission advised against it yet my reason for wanting to travel with my wife was because of my health condition at the time of  the trip.
His Excellency sir, kindly note that I attended every session of the program from day 1 to the last, missing only a lunch date due to my medication time.
Worthy to note is the fact that there was a basketball match that period and the hotel had a lot of guests as such this may be a case of mistaken identity. I couldn’t even attend the game due to my state of health as my body couldn’t stand the chill weather for long.
I therefore urge that you review this case within 7 days taking a more detailed look at the evidences available for such like video recordings especially audio showing time and date of such discussions. So you can realize that a mistake has been made here and my integrity restored, else I will be seeking legal redress in competent courts of law both in Nigeria and in the US.
I am olive and not dead. I am sane and capable of knowing what I did, said and who I met. As such cannot accept this false allegation by your mission on my person and reputation built over the years.
Mr. Ambassador sir, United States is held in high esteem for its providing platforms for liberties and the rule of law. It’s my hope that these beliefs will not fade in my sight due to this great injustice.
On the issue of revocation of Visas, I wish to state that until my name is cleared and apologies tendered , I have no intention to visit a country where I can be so easily accused and adjudged so, without any fair hearing as such you need not worry.
Your Excellency, I am confident that you will take steps to address my response to your letter as it will be most unfair to taint my reputation, carrier and psych by o false and untrue allegation.
It is sad that this false allegation has gone to the press and now in the public domain further tarnishing my image and reputation. I hope you will address this aspect properly when the issue is fully resolved.

Primary elections of Edo state has been cancelled and shifed

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff has cancelled the primary elections which held in Edo State after describing them as illegal.
The primaries took place on Saturday, June 18, 2016, and led to the emergence of Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the party’s candidate.
Sheriff expressed the sentiment in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The former chairman further released a schedule for a fresh congress in Edo State to run from June 23 to June 29.

Mrs Aisha Buhari the president's wife called Fayose a mad dog

Mrs Aisha Buhari wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has labelled Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose a mad dog. Mrs Buhari who is obliviously reacting to the allegation leveled against her by the Ekiti state governor that she was indicted in the bribery scandal of US Congessman, William Jefferson, for which he (Jefferson) was convicted in 2009.

Meanwhile, prominent Nigerian lawyers and rights activists are expressing divergent views over the freezing of an account belonging Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Fayose had alleged that his rights have been trampled on by the anti-graft agency, but the EFCC says it has the power to investigate and carry out such actions in the course of its duties.

According to a report by SaharaReporters, sources at anti-graft  commission revealed that Fayose's account was frozen in connection with over N1.2billion he allegedly got in 2014 from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki for his re-election campaign.
It was further reported that sources claimed Fayose received sums of money from the office of the NSA with which he bribed security officials and voters to get into the Ekiti governorship for the second time.
A deposit of N500m was reportedly traced to the frozen bank account after the money was allegedly received from the ex-NSA office.

The report further revealed that after winning his election, Fayose deposited monies into his personal account and that of his Spotless Hotel in Ekiti, venue of the infamous rigging meeting.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said President Buhari was far from being a clean man. “Even the President cannot claim to be an angel,” the governor said, in reaction to the freezing of his Zenith Bank account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. “The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal (sic). When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialize the judgment for people to see and read.” The governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Lere Olayinka, later circulated links to and copies of the court document detailing Mrs Buhari’s mention in the scandal. The documents showed that in some of the exhibits tendered in convicting Mr. Jefferson of bribery, Mrs. Buhari was mentioned as transferring $170,000 to the American politician using a firm as proxy.

“Government Exhibits 36-87 (6/26/02 $170,000 wire transfer from account in Nigeria in the name of Aisha Buhari to an account in the name of The ANJ Group, LLC, identifying “William Jefferson” as Beneficiary),” the US Government Sentencing Memorandum said on page 22. Aisha Buhari could not be reached for comments. And Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, declined comments, saying he would need to check the documents himself before issuing an official statement. Fayose’s comment sparked a recollection of how Mr Jefferson, between 2000 and 2005, used his position as member of the U.S. House of Representatives to offer illegal services to private companies for cash rewards. Premium Times reports that Jefferson and his family, according to US authorities, received about $367,500 through through his firm, ANJ Group, for services rendered to iGate, an American broadband technology provider. An indigenous firm, Netlink Digital Television, had signed a joint venture with iGate to set up digital satellite TV and broadband Internet services in the country. NDTV was owned by Oyewole Fasawe, a PDP chieftain at the time. Mr. Jefferson was contracted to help promote iGate and NDTV partnership in Nigeria.
Following a lengthy trial, Mr. Jefferson was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Although Mr. Fasawe was arrested in 2005 by the EFCC, he was never convicted. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were also said to be a person of interest in the allegations. A final report released by the EFCC on June 22, 2006 about the bribery scandal also contained Mrs. Buhari’s Citizens Bank account statements and how she transferred funds to Mr. Jefferson. A 2007 New York Times’ article detailed how Mrs. Buhari told an acquaintance in Washington that she was a daughter of a former Nigerian head of state and a friend of Mr. Jefferson. “As the pair struck up a conversation and subsequently became friends, Mr. Assiba, then a security guard, said she told him that her father was the former military ruler of Nigeria, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and that her American friends included politicians like Mr. Jefferson of Louisiana.” Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has frozen the personal account of Governor Ayodele Fayose. A source was also said to have disclosed that the governor’s account in Zenith Bank in Ekiti as well as those of some of his associates were also frozen by the anti-graft agency. After visiting the bank at Onigari, GRA area of the state capital, Fayose described the action as illegal and while citing section 308 of the 1999 constitution, the governor stated that the federal government should fight corruption within the ambit of the law, since he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor. He said: “I got mind of the fact that the EFCC had placed restriction order on my personal account and that of my associates. I came here today and I have been able to see it. This action shows that this government has no respect for the constitution because I enjoy immunity under Section 308. “I support government fighting corruption, but it has to be within the ‎ambit of the law. You can investigate me, it is their right, but they have to wait till 2018, because I will be done by then. They should not be in a hurry because I will personally come to them for investigation.” In reaction to Fayose’s comments, the EFCC has said that immunity does not stop the commission from investigating suspicious account belonging to any governor. The anti-graft agency was reacting to the claim that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state cannot be investigated because of immunity currently being enjoyed by him. Speaking to Vanguard, Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman for the EFCC, said the immunity being enjoyed by any governor does not prevent the commission from investigating suspicious movements of money into their accounts. Fayose has lamented the undue interference in the internal affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the government and security agents. Speaking shortly after a meeting held by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) with governors and the Makarfi-led caretaker committee in Abuja on Thursday, June 16, Fayose alleged that there was a strategic effort to destroy the PDP in Nigeria. The governor however expressed confidence that the leadership crises currently rocking the party will soon be over.

Osinbajo said this in a keynote address at the ``First National Judicial Roundtable on The Intersection between Law and Religion’’ at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja yesterday.

The vice president insisted that in a situation where the laws were made in line with provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, such laws must be ``reasonably justifiable’’.
He averred that the protection of freedom of worship and the practice of one’s beliefs was crucial especially in a democratic society.
``Those laws according to the Nigerian Constitution where they restrict freedom of worship, must be “reasonably justifiable” in a democratic society in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health.
``Or for the purpose of protecting the rights and freedom or other persons.
``It is this test that restrictive laws should satisfy every law that seeks to restrict religious freedom, that is, is this legislation reasonably justifiable in a democratic society for the protection of one of the listed public goods?
``The crucial question with respect to such laws is whether they should be allowed to exercise prior-restraint?
``For example should there be licensing of places of worship or the dissemination of religious information?
``Or should the laws punish offending conduct when it occurs, such as the dissemination of hate speech?
``Is it reasonably justifiable in a democratic society to make laws that restrict freedom of speech by the fact that it says you must seek permission before you can make certain types of public utterances?’’
Osinbajo noted that prior-restraint ``is open to abuse, will unduly restrict freedom of worship and is probably unconstitutional’’.
He acknowledged that freedom of speech is not only a fundamental right (in its own right) but it is also the vehicle for the realisation of other rights.
He, however, said that the laws must however be enforced to punish offensive conduct such as the dissemination of hate speech or the perpetration of unlawful acts under the guise of religious beliefs.
The vice president emphasised that courts must be more careful to maintain their neutrality in the trial of such matters.
Osinbajo said that there was the need to deal with violent extremism emanating from religion.
He said the ideology of violent extremism such as that perpetrated by Boko Haram or ISIL rejects the common basis for human interaction under domestic laws of most societies and international law.
``The extremists reject the inalienable freedoms and rights of others, they reject the known universal mechanisms for negotiation, compromise, and resolution of differences.
``They seek to impose their world-view by force of terror on others.
``Consequently there is no reasoning with these groups.
``The rest of society who reject this bloodthirsty approach to spreading a set of beliefs must be prepared to sustain a war against extremism which must lead to the military defeat of its forces but more importantly victory in the ideological battle.’’
Osinbajo said there is no question at all that there are important intersections between law as an instrument of social control and religion especially in so far as it tends to define moral parameters and borders.
The Administrator of NJI, Justice Roseline Bozimo, represented by the Institute’s Secretary, Mal. Abubakar Maidama, said the roundtable was aimed at forging harmony and eliminating religious extremism.
She also said religion ought to be used as a tool for promotion of societal development rather than violence adding that both religion and law established standards for development.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, represented by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, noted that there was great relationship between religion and law as most legal systems drew from religious practice.
He said the topic was one that would ensure the peace in the country and pledged the commitment of the judiciary to ensure its success.

Mark Okoye II, 30, has been sworn in by the Anambra State governor. Flanked by his wife, he was inaugurated yesterday as the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning, Budget and Development Partners. The governor had reportedly wanted to make him a commissioner years ago, but there was an age limit.

He studied Finance at George Washington University and was a former Associate at Afrinvest West Africa. He was also a former Executive Director, Anambra State Investment Promotion & Protection Agency and also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Economic Planning and Budget. Tompolo is been tag as the main sponsor of the NIGER DELTA AVENGERS

The Niger Delta Patriotic Front (NDPF) has laid serious accusation against Mr Government Ekpemupolo popularly known as Tompolo that he is the main sponsor of the Niger Delta Avengers. The militant group has claimed responsibility for series of bombing of oil and gas pipelines in the region and has vowed to continue to do so until zero oil is produced in the region. The former militant has been accused of being a member of the Niger Delta Avenger due to his case with the federal government which has made him arraigned before a court in Lagos in absentia. Tompolo who has been hiding since the government got a warrant for his arrest has written series of letter denying his involvement in the operation of the militants. The coordinator of NDDF through Mr Joel Tamarakepreye who is the director of information of the group said in a statement released on June 19 that Tompolo was the greatest sponsor of the Niger Delta Avengers.

The statement read: The Niger Delta Patriotic Front feels compelled to react to the latest round of vitriol, misinformation and outright falsehood being feed the general public by a group of brigands and attention seekers that the so called Niger Delta Avengers has proven to be.
