CAF Champions League contenders, Enyimba FC, have appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to move their Federation Cup Round of 32 clash against fellow NPFL side El-Kanemi Warriors as a result of their continental date against Zamalek of Egypt in Port Harcourt on Sunday, June 19.
The People’s Elephant, winners of Africa’s most prestigious club competition in 2003 and 2004, host the White Tribe at the Adokiye Amiesiamaka Stadium in one of the Day 1 matches of the group stage of this year’s competition. “Enyimba has appealed for postponement of the encounter, and the NFF has granted this plea. They are flying Nigeria’s flag and the NFF has promised to give them all the support in their quest for glory,” Emmanuel Adesanya, Head of Federation Cup, told thenff recalls that the sole Nigerian flag bearers at this season’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League Enyimba football club defeated another North African team Etoile du Sahel 4 – 3 on penalties as the tie between the two ended 3 – 3 on aggregates to reach this stage. The Nigerian side won the first leg 3 – 0 in Port Harcourt. In the second leg played in Sousse, the Tunisians opened the score-sheet in the 43rd minute from a freekick to give the North African team a life-line. Etoile played with so much intensity from the first blast of the whistle with Enyimba playing with ‘ten defenders and one goal keeper’. The hosts were rewarded with the second goal in the 61st minute and then made the score level fifteen minutes from time. The Nigerians soaked all the pressure in the titanic battle as the second leg ended 3 – 0 in Sousse in favour of Etoile du Sahel.
The game went straight into penalty shootout. With both teams losing two of their spot kicks respectively, the epic battle went into sudden-death. The Nigerian team were however lucky as the hosts lost a kick, with Enyimba making no mistake.
